READ

“The shrimp was lying on Oscar’s arm with her mouth open. Her romper suit read: I LOVE DADDY.
Daddy himself was playing on his iPhone with his free hand.
Hennequin bent forwards to put the clean laundry into the basket. She arched her back slightly.
It had the desired effect. Oscar glanced at her cleavage and looked away again sheepishly. Like a naughty schoolboy.
She had to smile to herself. The husband was in a dry spell, and had been for months, no doubt. All that time, Didi had probably rejected him, pushed him away, because a baby was growing inside her and her body no longer felt like something sexual, but like an incubator. Or perhaps she had wanted him, had craved his closeness and comfort, but he just hadn’t been able to face it. Incontinence, weight gain, mood swings, pain, a steadily growing, constantly moving baby: incubators weren’t sexy.
But tanned, toned maternity nurses in tight-fitting outfits were.”Excerpt from: De Kraamhulp (Close to the cradle)
“Photography is like stealing. You rob someone of a moment that exposes something essential about their character, their soul if you like. There are people who are very conscious of that, who find that terrifying. The thought that everyone, friend of foe, can get so close to you, look you straight in the eye and judge you without having any control over it or being able to respond. A part of them has become the property of the photographer.”Excerpt from: Close-up
“I have a thing about old buildings. Crumbling walls, collapsed roofs, skeletons of wood and stone, without windows and doors. They move me. Bare and naked, without pretensions.
As I walk around, the atmosphere washes over me. I feel like lying down, flat on my back, arms spread wide. Like a child making a butterfly in the warm summer sand. Breathe in. Drink in.
I don’t.
Why do we never do what we really want?”Excerpt from: Rendez-vous
“It has struck me that people seldom listen to the meaning of underlying words. There are only a few people who recognize the silence beyond the scream, the gentle weeping that hides beyond tough statements. They hear only the words, the sentences, when there is so much more to take in. People who are too self-absorbed to notice, really see or fathom others. Often, they don't even know themselves.”Excerpt from: Close-up
